What are BS/MD Programs?

BS/MD programs (also known as BA/MD or Baccalaureate-MD programs) can be an excellent option for high school seniors considering careers in medicine. These programs grant talented high school seniors an admission offer to both an undergraduate institution and an affiliated medical school.

High school students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine should consider BS/MD programs for several reasons. Here are three key reasons to consider:

BS/MD programs can offer students a more holistic approach to medical education. Students are relieved of the pressures associated with the traditional pathway of getting into medical school. Many BS/MD programs (for example, Brown University’s Program in Liberal Medical Education or Albany Medical College’s Leadership in Medicine program) place a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and encourage students to explore interests outside of medicine and healthcare, such as politics, journalism, business, philosophy, etc. This can help students develop a more well-rounded understanding of the medical field and can prepare them to become more robust healthcare professionals.

BS/MD programs often offer a more structured path to medical school. Students typically receive mentorship from medical faculty and support staff who are dedicated to guiding students on their BS/MD journey from day one. Additionally, students receive the camaraderie and support of a committed and industrious peer group who are equally passionate about pursuing a career in medicine. Programs typically require students to maintain a certain GPA and complete specific coursework in order to continue on to medical school, in addition to advising students on which courses to take in order to build towards their professional goals as future physicians.

Finally, BS/MD programs often offer unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in the medical field as early as their undergraduate freshman years. Many programs offer clinical experiences and research opportunities that allow students to work alongside medical professionals and gain valuable experience that can set them apart from other medical school applicants.

Given these overarching reasons (and many more which are program-specific), high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine should absolutely consider the BS/MD route.
